Accordian Vincent McGrath was born in Ros Dumhach (Rossport), a small village perched above the Atlantic Ocean in the beautifull Erris region of Co.Mayo. He is carrying on a tradition inherited from a family of renowned musicians and dancers. His father, Jimmy (Jim Mhichael Eoin), a fine sean-nós dancer, and his six uncles were all distinguished fiddle players who played for the scoileanna damhsa (school dances) and in the parish halls thoughout Erris. Two of his uncles, Mike and John earned their crust in the US playing and teaching music. Vincent is a box player with his own distinctive style and he also recieved his uncle John's gift for composition. This CD represents the first recorded compilation of Vincent's tunes. The strong rhythmic line to his music echoes both the distinctive style of his native area and the particular dancing skills that are his family legacy. Retired from teaching, Vincent now lives in his native Rossport, overlooking the Sruth Fada Con bay of the Children of Lir fame and his family home at Rinn na Rón. These tunes are a tribute, a paying back to his place and to his heritage- "cloch amháin eile ar leacht a shinsear". |
